rhapsody of a reluctant birth

about

I really threw everything I had into this track. Choirs made of wolf howls. Cheerleading chants. Orchestral bits. Metal guitar riffs. Poem about The Last Unicorn. Wordplay about bottoming / class divide. Ecclesiastical rap. Piano. Screaming. There are ~450 versions.

This is where things get real for Lucifer. Too real. Like human real. Like all (good?) parents, god punishes Lucifer to teach him a lesson. He binds him to a human body to experience life, hoping that, by the end of it, he gains perspective. Tinfoil theory but what if that’s how we’re all born? Celestial beings challenged with being human, only to later rejoin the cosmic orchestra, and remember?

Literally, it’s about being born into a world where the body you didn’t choose has inherent sociopolitical implications. It’s about having a bone to pick (because you picked none of your bones) and seemingly no one listening. It’s unfair. Occupying a physical form at all is difficult. Having a body as a trans person? Even harder.

Friends and I joke I wish were a disembodied orb of light. "I think this body's ugly; I'd rather be a tidal wave. L-U-C-K-Y lucky - don't wanna eat, I hate the game." It's like god gave me a time-out in a prison made of meat. Yucky.

lyrics

They grinned like a cage
Mind a left shoe on a right foot body
Worsened with age
Slipping like shadows each page
Got a brain like a match
Spark and then hatch and then burn down softly
Age and it's worse
No tyrant's castle's complete without a curse
And nothing comes out of the gate
But tales to make children behave
They fail to keep people safe
Keep the bull close
Cold as the clouds hope
That the beasts will coven in their grave
And if the castle that no one knows
Will sink under the king's toes
When the sea comes to greet him
And punish his greed
If I'm not the man will I go
Huh

I think this body’s ugly
I’d rather be a tidal wave
L-u-c-k-y lucky
Don’t wanna eat I hate the game
I think this body’s ugly
I think the grin looks like a cage
L-u-c-k-y lucky
Don’t wanna be I hate my name

Yeah? oh no
Ugh
Yeah? okay
Ugh

Everything is usually easy for me
What’s all of this bullshit
I don’t wanna do it
Everything is usually easy for me
Crashed here on a comet
You make me want to vomit
Everything is usually easy for me
What’s all of this bullshit
I don’t wanna do it
Everything is usually easy for me
Prison for a goddess
Binding up colossus

Stigmata matters, mama
Man, do my palms hurt
I don’t wanna be madonna
I am a monster
Turning trauma into dogma
So I can conjure
Devil out of dalai lama’s
Honor to conquer
You
I won’t do
What you do
Unless you do it to me first

Y’all know we got that groove
Let me see your body move
Ah-oo, ah-ah
Oo oo, ah-ah ah-ah

Yeah, oh no
Ugh
Yeah okay
Ugh

Everything is usually easy for me
What’s all of this bullshit?
I don’t wanna do it
Everything is usually easy for me
Prison for a goddess
Binding up colossus

I won’t do
What you do
Unless you do it to me first

Y’all know we got that groove
Let me see your body move
Ah-oo, ah-ah
Oo oo, ah-ah ah-ah

I would make mistakes to restart
Really bad ones
I would drive a stake through my heart
If I had one
I would make mistakes to restart
Really bad ones
I would drive a stake through my heart
If I had one

I think this body’s ugly
I’d rather be a tidal wave
L-u-c-k-y lucky
Don’t wanna eat I hate the game
I think this body’s ugly
I think the grin looks like a cage
L-u-c-k-y lucky
Don’t wanna be I hate my name

You got an empty fuckin head
Like a parliament
Recessed like the filter
Call the blank space opulence
You think that confidence
The opposite of consequence
Switch can't top
But your drop falls, bottomless
Heaven, between, or to hell
I'm nonmonogamous
And baby, oh gee
And then oh well, you're done
Regardless

about

MEDUSA Buffalo, New York

Medusa is a "revenge pop" musician based in New York. They're pretty sure they subconsciously stole calling their music "___-pop" from their friend Zand, who coined "ugly-pop," but it's way too late in the game to undo it now.
