Opening and closing with the ghostly, unanswered call of the now-extinct Kauai O’o bird, Longlong is the first part of a dual soliloquy. This half is performed by god, and it’s about the regret of pushing his son away.

He’s wondering why, despite doing everything in his power to show him, Lucifer can’t see how important and powerful he is. Like any parent with a rebel child, it’s gotta hurt to watch them resent you for just trying to do what’s best for them.

In a literal sense, however, this song was written about missing my partner in a high- stress time that took him away. It’s about hating that I couldn't have a moment of his time, but knowing it wasn’t his fault, so then holding in those feelings out of love, and shutting them up.

Longlong was made while longing, for a long time. It's full of ache and soaring guitars, coming to a head with an emotionally intense passage where I actually belt, which is a style of singing I don't think I've ever really been confident enough to touch on an album before.
